Reimagining Kerameikos
Reclaiming public space in historic Athens
Client: Design Exploration
Location: Kerameikos, Greece
Year: 2025
Project Type: Speculative Urban Design
Role: Urban Strategy, Spatial Planning
Located in the historic district of Kerameikos in Athens, this project reimagines an underused urban park as an active civic landscape designed to reshape everyday urban behavior.Despite its dense fabric and rich history, Athens lacks well-activated green spaces. Many parks remain neglected and underutilized, weakening their role as places of encounter and collective life. This proposal addresses that condition by transforming the park from a passive green area into a structured yet flexible social environment.
A central terraced platform, finished in clay-toned materials, operates as both gathering device and symbolic reference to Kerameikos’ ceramic heritage. Rather than replicating historical forms, the design abstracts memory into material and geometry. The proposal restructures the park through intersecting curved pathways that dissolve rigid boundaries and increase movement permeability. Visibility and spatial flow become tools to generate safety, activity, and encounter. The park is conceived not as ornamental greenery, but as an urban mediator, capable of redefining how the surrounding neighborhood engages with collective space.
