Illuminating Red Sands Forts
From Isolation to Interaction

Client: Design Exploration
Location: Red Sands Forts, United Kingdom
Year: 2025
Project Type: Adaptive Reuse of Historic Military Structures
Role: Concept Development, Architectural Strategy & Visualization
Originally built during World War II to defend the English coastline, the Red Sands Forts now remain suspended between past and present, monuments of isolation standing in the open sea.
This proposal reinterprets their defensive character as an opportunity for openness and collective experience. Rather than preserving them as static relics, the project explores how adaptive reuse can activate historic structures while maintaining their structural integrity and symbolic weight.

The intervention introduces a transparent architectural layer within the existing steel framework. Glass volumes are inserted, allowing natural light to penetrate and visually reconnect the interior with the surrounding horizon. The contrast between heavy industrial steel and lightweight transparency reinforces the dialogue between past and present. Light becomes a central architectural tool.
Projected wave patterns animate the façade, shifting in intensity and color throughout the day. These projections transform the rigid geometry of the fort into a dynamic surface, symbolizing movement, continuity, and renewed cultural relevance.
